Call for papers

The theme of the workshop is the significance of wide cognition – which is embodied, enacted, extended, embodied, and distributed cognition – for social intelligence.

Wide cognition has, over the last couple of decades, become more and more widespread in all areas of cognitive science – from neuroscience to cognitive psychology to cognitive linguistics to philosophy to computer science and robotics. Unlike traditional frameworks for cognitive science, these approaches do not explain cognitive phenomena solely in terms of the manipulation of (language-like) internal representations but stress that (1) minds can extend into the environment; (2) agents are cognitive insofar as they are embodied; (3) their cognitive scaffolding is enacted, or constructed, in an active fashion; (4) cognitive phenomena are always interactions with the environment; (5) and cognitive acts are often paradigmatically distributed among multiple agents. The workshop’s aim is to explore the relevance of this body of research for understanding social intelligence. In particular, its reliance on environmental design, bodily interaction, shared cognitive and symbolic tools, and complex schemas of collaboration.

The workshop will also feature discussion of a white paper of the topic that is being prepared in collaboration with the SINTELNET coordination network (sintelnet.eu).

Abstracts

Abstracts of less than 500 words will be accepted till May 30th. All submissions should be made through the easychair website. Abstracts will be evaluated on a first come basis so early submission is strongly encouraged in order to avoid missing out on available spots.

Registration and accommodation

Early registration ends June 30th. The early registration fee is 150 Euro (reduced rate – 75 Euro), while the late registration fee is 200 Euro. Fees cover the workshop sessions, conference materials, lunches, coffee breaks and the minibus to and from Warsaw airport.

Accommodation is available at the conference hotel. The cost is 100 Euro in total for four nights (August 19th to 23rd) in shared twin en suite rooms and includes breakfasts (limited single rooms available at higher price). Availability of accommodation cannot be guaranteed for late registrants.

Registration and accommodation fees might change in the event of significant movement in the exchange rate of the Polish currency.

Kazimierz Dolny is close to the river, so from time to time there is a problem with mosquitoes. Bring a repellent just in case.

The hotel has a WiFi network, and there are two ATMs in the town centre. You will need not more than 300 PLN for dinners (including the conference dinner), beer, snacks, and souvenirs during the duration of the workshop. It's hardly possible to spend more.

The conference dinner is organized in one of the restaurants in the centre of the town. The dinner cost is not included in the fee; we only book a table.

Kazimierz Dolny lies on the Vistula, about a hundred and twenty kilometres south east of Warsaw, the closest international airport and railway hub. A minibus will be organised to take workshop participants from Warsaw to Kazimierz and back at the start and end of the workshop. If arriving on a different date, it will be necessary to make your own way down to Kazimierz.

Apart from the minibus, the easiest way to reach Kazimierz from Warsaw is by train to Pulawy and then either by taxi or by bus to Kazimierz. The trains to Pulawy run from the Warsaw Central station every two and a half hours or so (if arriving at the airport, the best way to reach the central station is by bus 175 - the ticket is 2.80 PLN). It is best to use the on-line rail route planner (leaving 'Warszawa Centralna' arriving 'Pulawy Miasto') to find out the exact times the trains run. The cost of the rail ticket is under 30 PLN in second class and under 45 PLN in first class.

The most convenient connection between the Central (or Zachodnia) train station from the Warsaw airport is the rail link. To plan your journey from the airport to Puławy using the online rail route planner, enter "Warszawa Lotnisko Chopina" as the beginning of the journey.

In Pulawy there is a taxi stand just outside the station. The trip to Kazimierz is only 14 km (about 35 PLN).

An important tip: Do not, by mistake, go to the 'other' Kazimierz, which is a suburb of Kraków.

Image The workshop sessions will be held in one of the historic granaries that used to line the river banks in Kazimierz. The building has been turned into a hotel and workshop participants have the option of staying there as well. Note that there are almost no single rooms, and most participants stay in twin rooms (with ensuite bathrooms). Should you require a single room, please contact the organizers directly. Note that the price of the accommodation might be higher in such a case.

Information about the hotel is available (unfortunately only in Polish) on its website. There is also a handy map showing how to reach it.

This is what the Lonely Planet Guide has to say about Kazimierz:

Set on the bank of the Vistula in a narrow valley at the foot of wooded hills, Kazimierz Dolny is a small, picturesque town with much charm and atmosphere. For many years Kazimierz has attracted artists and intellectuals, and the place has a pleasantly bohemian flavour.

StayPoland has some interesting information about Kazimierz and a very similar view of the place:

Scenically located on the bank of the River Vistula and encircled by low wooded hills, Kazimierz Dolny offers an impressive number of historic sights for such a tiny town. These, together with charming views of the river, the profusion of greenery, steep-sided gullies, fresh air and quaint tenement houses, contribute to the beauty of Kazimierz Dolny. For many years the town has been a magnet for artists, writers, architects and journalists seeking a unique and creativity-enhancing atmosphere.
